‘Some day, this war’s gonna end’
Since this was Remembrance Day, I posted a link to Twitter about a Feb. 27, 2008 post based on the monologue of Col. Walter Kurtz (Marlon Brando) to Capt. Benjamin L. Willard (Martin Sheen) in the masterpiece-level 1979 film Apocalypse Now Redux (The horror, the horror).
I particularly liked the writing, and the truth within, but it took an actor of Brando’s talent to bring the words fully to life and hit you with their chilling force.
The same goes for Lt. Col. Bill Kilgore (Robert Duvall), the air cavalry officer when he talks about how he loves the smell of napalm in the morning. The writing isn’t as eloquent (which is good screenwriting; Kilgore and Kurtz are completely different characters), but watch this short clip and tell me what you think about his facial expression when he says, “Some day, this war’s gonna end.”
