The ‘funky drummer’ has died

Clyde Stubblefield, drummer for soul and funk legend James Brown, wielded the sticks in 1970 on a largely instrumental tune called Funky Drummer, a solo from which would go on to be one of the most sampled bits of music ever. He has died at age 73.

So long Mary Tyler Moore: Comedic whiz and feminist icon

I can’t remember if the Mary Tyler Moore Show was the first to spoof the eccentric hothouse atmosphere of a newsroom, but it remains one of the best. For columnist Margaret Sullivan, the show supplied more than yucks during its seven-year run; it provided a role model.

Ringling Brothers circus to call it quits

An American institution is folding after 146 years. It seems than not even lion-taming can hold the attention of today’s children. Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus will hold its final performances in May.
