A decade in Toronto

I arrived in Toronto late on the afternoon of Friday, July 21, 2000. To commemorate, I’ve randomly spit out a list of likes, dislikes and memories.

G20 coverage and Twitter

The Toronto Star’s Antonia Zerbisias, a voluminous tweeter herself, touts Twitter as having provided the best G20 news coverage. But in the her Twitter fangirl-ness, Zerbisias overlooks some salient points.

Ira Basen on when everyone’s a journalist

Many of the self-described journalists who feel most hard-done-by at the G20 Summit work in the alternative sphere, notes veteran journalist and author Ira Basen. It’s a different world when virtually anyone can call themselves a journalist or pronounce themselves to be doing journalism. And the blurring line between being a journalist and being an activist is also [...]

Journalists, protests and Blatchford

Globe and Mail columnist Christie Blatchford offered her thoughts on why she has no sympathy for “self-anointed journalists” who had a tough go of it during the G20 Summit on June 26 and 27. I offer my thoughts as to why she misses the point and raise a few other issues for discussion.

Anne Mroczkowski lands a job … while in her 50s

Anne Mroczkowski got whacked as an anchor at Citytv News back in January. The Toronto Star had a blockbuster story on Tuesday: A young woman claimed to have a year-long affair with Coun. Adam Giambrone, the TTC chair and mayoral candidate. By Wednesday, Giambrone — who had his long-time partner Sarah McQuarrie with him on stage at his Feb. 1 campaign launch party — was an ex-mayoral candidate. It [...]

‘Rednecks, white socks and Blue Ribbon beer’ — Torontoized

A classic hard country redneck anthem is Johnny Russell’s version of Rednecks, White Socks and Blue Ribbon Beer – number 347 on the top 500 country songs of all time, according to one dubious list I saw. :) I’ve tried to adapt it to Toronto realities. This evocative tune was likely written about the anonymous roadside bars [...]
